How we had met

And the simple answer is through salsa!

Mrs Matchmaker was my colleague then and when she heard that I had an interest (but had been too lethargic to sign up for lessons) in salsa, she pestered me for a month before I relented to visit Union Square with her.

I was burdened by a work project and toyed with the idea of cancelling our meeting. But as coincidences go, I only then realised I don’t have her contact number, so left with no choice, I dragged my tired body to go meet her.

And that was the moment that would change my life.

Though I clutched my bag in my lap and stuck to my seat, I couldn’t withstand Mrs Matchmaker’s cajoling. I started learning basic steps, then turns and then one gentleman grabbed me for a dance. And there and then, just knowing these basic steps, I experienced the delight of partner dancing.

Expressing the ideal picture of the man leading and the woman following, both moving beautifully towards the same goal it was the ideal man-woman relationship to me. I committed to salsa lessons in JJ right there and then.

That was the 3rd or 4th time I was down in union. Still very raw, and nervous and excited about dancing. SO (now my HTB) had led Mrs Matchmaker back to our seats after their dance. Mrs Matchmaker introduced us. To my surprise, this experienced dancer asked raw, gangly me for a dance. Extremely flattered, I grabbed the chance.

And that was (then) one of the smoothest, gentlest dance I ever had. Because I was then more used to harder leads, I missed his lead quite a few times but he must have liked the dance. He asked for my phone number right after.

Stunned, I explained that “I don’t give my phone number to people I don’t really know.” For some reason, that left an impression with him….
